Grand Mages are mages who have proven their ability in both casting and understanding magic.

These mage tests are conducted in three stages:
1.	The first test is a survival challenge.
2.	The second test involves combat between the participants.
3.	The third and final test is a duel against one of the three mage testers. While the opponent is chosen at random, winning the fight is not strictly required the purpose of this test is to evaluate the mage’s deeper understanding and application of magic.

Ravyn Pain proved himself not only through his ability to cast magic, but also through his profound knowledge of it making him a formidable force.

He faced the combat-oriented tester in a full-scale battle, eventually having to unleash his magic without restraint just to keep up. This strategy triggered the tester’s own competitive instincts something Ravyn had anticipated and cleverly used to his advantage.

In the end, both suffered severe concussions from the intense clash, but Ravyn passed the test with flying colors. His performance was so outstanding that he was appointed as an additional overseer for future yearly tests  giving him the authority to judge others’ use of magic, and perhaps even to find a personal student worthy of inheriting his knowledge.
