Preach, brother.
A prime example I can easily remember, even a decade (or two...?) later is in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (probably SoC, but I think all later variants had this mission too), where you have to escort a scientist from somewhere back to his base/laboratory. Nothing more infuriating than watching a guy in a HAZMAT suit just sit there casually, while mutants rip him apart by the fire.

There are few things in games more annoying than escort missions, where the NPC has zero self preservation instinct.
