Eliza had never been a popular girl. She was amazed she even got an invitation. But what costume should she wear? She didn't have an animal in mind, but she had always loved Ninja Turtles growing up. So she went out and got a costume. This seemed like a fun excuse to meet people and talk about favorite childhood cartoons.
Sadly, not many people even showed up to this party. Cori and Daniel had come together, while Brandon and Natalie were content to drink and joke about cheap college parties. Eliza was stuck quietly drinking to herself, wondering who their host was.
Eliza had only a few seconds to react as the walls shook and the ground split open, and two of the guests began to transform in front of her. The voice seemed to reverberate throughout the room, and then she felt the voice focusing on her. Desperately she tried to get the costume off, but the thin fabric had already become brittle and stiff, and her hands were already morphing into flat flippers.
She pleaded with the voice to stop -- she liked turtles, but she didn't actually plan on becoming one! -- but her limbs seemed to bend and fold on their own, and the foam shell she wore grew harder and heavier on her back. The warm sand dug into the wrinkles of what had once been fabric. She tried to speak out, but her new beak had already replaced her lips. And then the voice... seemed to take on a different tone. It was talking about... egg laying? Turtles needed to lay eggs after all. And she... needed to lay them. There was so much beach, and so many eggs to lay. What... what had she been focused on just now?
There was a strange sort of calmness that came over her, but it was a good pleasant calmness. And it felt like there was so much to do once she was done laying... swimming in that ocean, finding something to eat, maybe a mate...
