This week's random sports fact: In a 1964 game versus the San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall picked up a fumble from the 49ers offense, and ran it into the end zone... [b][i]the opposite end zone.[/i][/b] While recovering the fumble, he got disoriented and accidentally "ran the wrong way.":https://youtu.be/R9J4cm9PEWk It's the only time to-date an NFL player has done this. After getting into the end zone (his own), Marshall threw the football into the air in celebration, thinking he scored a touchdown. In actuality, he scored a safety; 2 points for the 49ers, rather than 6 or 7 points for the Vikings. A 49ers player allegedly ran up to Marshall after the play, and said "Thanks, Jim!". This embarrassing 2-point mishap did not result in Minnesota losing the game, they went on to win it 27-22, much to the chagrin of the 49ers. So, was Jim Marshall a bad player? This seems like something a bad player would do, so that'd be a reasonable guess. But no... he's in the Hall of Fame, and is widely considered one of the greatest defensive ends ever to play in the NFL. This makes his 2-point mistake all the more unusual.
