Honestly there's a lot to speculate so far. It could work like Inception, where the dreamer is sharing a dream with another person, and as such their lucidity isn't integral to the dream's stability. Or it could work like Paprika, where the dreamer's consciousness is removed from their mind and taken somewhere else. There's also that memory from the last page of the strange figure by the car. Perhaps he experienced something traumatic and his brain fractured into separate entities?
I mean, I'm also just really into dream fiction, so if there's another explanation, I'm curious to see what it is.
