Mr. Bennin (often called 'Chip' in the comic) is Mark and Tom's councilor/therapist.  Perhaps somewhat casually unorthodox, he's a calm, gentle, rational man who is going to help show Mark some more reasonable ways to react to things-- and help him get his antisocial habits and temperament more under control.  Tempered Trails isn't perfect, but this kind of contact will be a lot better for Mark than his distant and aloof stepfather at least.
