That makes a lot of sense he got so attached to Agatha that he was practically in love with her and he wanted to be with her but if this is the past that means that this is when he starts to fall into that deep depression and before he started dating his two partners so we might be seeing what he tried to do in his past when she broke things off with him things are about to get real dark

Remember, Al's tail being long means its the past, and we know he and Agatha broke it off for about 2 years before they met up again in that Coffee Shop. My guess this will be her main reasons to break it off, and Al trying to save it but ultimately failing. This might also explain his depression spiral he had before he met Richard and Jill. Al pretty much admits he probably would have killed himself if it werent for them. Hell, that could be a reason why his tail is so short in the present.
