In the tabletop game in which I play Thunk, he is an artificial creature and in order to survive, he absorbed the essence of a town and all the inhabitants, the town that he came from.  The town itself was all artificial as well and was going to disappear either way. So they sacrificed to save one of their own.   Anyways not all of them are happy with Thunk in charge, and so, when given the opportunity, several tried to get out and take over.
