Mark Joye is a severe anti-social whose aversion to social interaction can make him seem cagey, defensive, and perhaps even a little mean sometimes.  He has almost no friends, considers himself the "most hated kid in school", and avoids contact with others in most situations.  He has a history of overt reaction to being picked on in school, and being triggered by his step-father, whom he strongly dislikes.
