Newfert is a zeetvah, a demi-human race with long ears and snouts from Larry Elmore's [i]Snarfquest[/i], a comic strip published in [i]Dragon[/i] magazine in the '80s. He was a knight of his people, known as Newfert the Bold, until he tried to usurp the throne from King Snarf. As punishment, Snarf sold him to slavers, who took him to a distant land where nobody would know him or be able to find him. For a time, he was kept as an exotic pet by his master, but was eventually sold to a stable as a pony slave, pulling carts and wagons while naked and bridled like an animal. When the city guard was looking for slaves to become war ponies, Newfert was chosen due to his strength, stamina, and fighting prowess. Now a war pony of the city guard, he patrols the city, keeping the peace, having accepted that he will spend the rest of his life as a naked bound slave. He has risen to the position of senior war pony, tasked with training new recruits, and has even been permitted to sire a son, who hopes to someday become a war pony like his father.
