Nick had been in the forest for a good 2 hours now, going in the direction that the other scouts had told him to - and he had yet to find a "wild animal" he could "tame". So far every creature had gotten away from him - that one squirrel he swore was laughing at him when he dove to catch it and ended up covering himself in dirt.

"Such a weird badge!" Nick said out loud as he kicked a rock that was on the trail, one hand traveling to the hilt of the knife at his side.

[i]"Remember, Nick. Only use this if you have to. You're on your own out there. That's part of the point of this badge. Facing fears and taming a wild creature. And remember, enjoy yourself. I'll see you later tonight."[/i] The words of the scoutmaster rang in his ears - but Nick shivered slightly at the thought of using the blade on another living creature, wild or not.

Nick just needed one more badge before he would be able to be able to move up in rank. He was the only one his age left in the troop to not have the "Taming" badge. Apparently, the others had all gotten it on the same weekend when Nick was on a family trip. Now he had to get it himself. One weird thing, though, was he had never heard of the badge before. And it wasn't in the national scout guide. But the rest of his troop had it - so maybe it was new and the guides hadn't been updated.

Nick still didn't quite understand how he'd prove he had tamed whatever animal he came across. He has a rope, leash and a few collars in his bag. That was the best way he could think of to do it. Who knows - maybe he'd get to go home with a new pet?

Of course, the other scouts had told him he'd come across the perfect creature to tame if he just followed the path, but they wouldn't tell him what to look for. Just that he'd, 'know when he saw it'.

"Stupid James. Stupid Kenny." Nick's eyes were on the ground as he kicked another rock, thinking about the zebra and the woodchuck who were constant annoyances. Nick remembered the time they tried to scare him with the muzzle - only to be interrupted by the scoutmaster who had become suspicious. They had been better to him in the years since, but not by much.

If Nick hadn't been lost in his thoughts, he might have seen the large rock next to the path, or the really large creature standing on top of it, watching the fox boy as he approached. He might have had time to turn around, or approach cautiously.

But that wasn't to be. Instead, Nick didn't notice the creature until he was practically right on top of it, and he let out a bit of an uncontrolled "yip" as he first felt, then saw the creature. Nick froze, eyes wide and mouth agape as his eyes landed on the being. Nick couldn't tell what it was - a dog? Large cat? And... that was definitely a knotted cock. The largest Nick had ever, at this point in his life, laid eyes on.

There was a rumble from the chest of the creature in front of him - almost a purr, but not quite, "A fox this time? Good. Its been years since they sent a fox."

Nick's mind practically exploded. [i]Did this thing just talk???[/i]

Nick's hand reached for and fumbled as he drew the knife, intent on protecting himself from the beast in front of him - but something was wrong. The knife - its balance was off. And Nick's eyes fell from the creature to what should have been a large knife in his hand - but to only see a hilt.

There was another rumble, something Nick would list akin to a chuckle, from the creature as it began to move forward towards Nick, "Well, that won't be any help, now will it?"

Nick's fingers went limp and the hilt fell to the ground as he looked up again, the hot breath of the creature now on his face,

"Now, lets get you that badge, little fox."

So, I was seriously intrigued by the Red XIII picture I posted this week. I don't know why, but I couldn't get him out of my mind. So I thought I should give him a partner.

Who though?

I hadn't done anything with Nick in a bit - and I thought the two of them might work well together. Hopefully you like it! You'll notice a few changes to Nick's back story. In this, he never left the scouts, and thus why he is older and still in the scouts.

Red is also very willing to help the scouts all earn their badges - having made a deal with the local scoutmasters, who were very willing to add the badge to their troop as long as they were able to have some time with the mythical creature themselves.
