School isn't compulsory in the 26th century (mostly because for them it isn't a system made by robber barons to babysit children of factory workers and churn out yet more factory workers), so with the emphasis being on actually learning things, it's a much more casual atmosphere. Kids are encouraged to be comfortable, to do whatever they need to in order to get in the mode to learn about things.

Natalie takes her shoes off, sits her stuff near her and brushes her hair, happy to half-listen about whatever lesson they've got for the day, unaware that whoever's sat behind her is learning just how many ways one can take a PET video.
