Guy Fawkes night originally celebrated the failure of the Gunpowder plot (to blow up the House of Lords & kill the king). These days, Guy Fawkes has also become a symbol of malcontent with the government & fighting for freedom, ala V for Vendetta. I highly recommend you read the graphic novel (or at least watch the film) if you haven't already. ♥
