A deviantart request for InformedDissent of their characters from their rather violent and sexy NSFW webcomic Blood Stains, full of betrayal and loyalty, espionage and rebellion, and so on.
Unfortunately, dummy that I am, I only saw a few pages of the comic when I started drawing this, not realizing they had quite a lot up on a separate website. Oops! ... so I potentially missed out on reference material
These two characters as I understand it are lovers bonded ultimately by their brutal work together, Sonya on the left coming from Russia and the so-called Uzbek on the right from Uzbekistan. I kept their characterization pretty basic -- two lovers against the world.
I imagine them here perhaps finally trying to escape the world by living the nomadic life with only their yurt and some basic supplies. But alas, they can't escape their past and are disrupted yet again by violence.
The comic is not an anthro comic, but the author invited me to reimagine however I wanted, and furries are my thang ;) I wanted to make it make some kind of sense, so Sonya is an Arctic Wolf, which has a wide range including Russia. For The Uzbek, I picked the Golden Jackal -- there is a wide variety of them, so I'm not sure this is the exact kind that would be found in Uzbekistan.
I can't remember what the little shrubby plants are, but they are found in the Kyzylkum Desert, part of which is in Uzbekistan, where I more or less placed these characters.
I tried to keep it a bit more cartoonish and 'frame' the focal characters -- the foreground characters are minimally detailed - 'shadows of the past' if you will. Obviously the big red text has a comic title-page vibe. The blood spatters that are vivid regardless of light/shadow.
It was extremely challenging for me to make this not feel flat .. learned to play a lot in this one with exaggerated value contrasts in the forms, the background .. and perhaps most importantly the lineart! Also guns and weaponry are not something I ever draw so that was its own challenge. Overall I think it's fairly successful (I think the poses and the expressions really carry it) though I don't want to look anymore so I don't nitpick myself to death :p
