minor inaccuracy, the interpolation isn't [i]exactly[/i] what's being calculated by grouping fragments in quads, rather the mipmapping level is what's being calculated. this means that if mipmapping is disabled, there is no link between the fragments being grouped in quads and the way the texture gets interpolated (essentially wasting the calculation). good post btw
