Oh man, my cursory Web search didn't turn up that juicy nugget. And what a fascinating (and also dismaying) write-up! It not only covers the fun technical bits that give a feel for what security work is like, it really shows the darker side of many companies when they are confronted with their own security issues. I'm happy to see Milachu get checks from these folks, but am also happy to help hold them to account. And for those who want more information on the subject, the "Internet of Dongs Project":https://internetofdon.gs/ has you covered!

The problem with "app-enabled" toys like these is that the manufacturer all but invariably fails to design the apps securely (assuming they aren't outright making them malicious). The company that knows how to make a sex toy (or any other physical widget, really) can preeeetty much be assumed to be a company clueless about IT. Heck, even most companies making IT equipment "can't get the security right":https://www.cisecurity.org/advisory/multiple-vulnerabilities-in-cisco-security-products-could-allow-for-arbitrary-code-execution_2025-073. "Remote sex toys might spice up your love life – but crooks could also get a kick out of them":https://cybernews.com/privacy/remote-sex-toys-might-spice-up-your-love-life-but-crooks-could-also-get-a-kick-out-of-them/ (discusses the Lovense app specifically) "r/lovense: App Privacy / Security concerns":https://www.reddit.com/r/lovense/comments/j1yzjy/app_privacy_security_concerns/ From the "Lovense software FAQ":https://www.lovense.com/faq/Software/Lovense-Remote, question 8: "Why does the app need to access my phone's storage, camera, microphone, etc.?":
These permissions are required to enable the app’s features. You can choose to not allow permission from your phone’s on-screen prompt or change it in your phone's settings. Some features will not be available without certain permissions enabled.
This is why I like hardware with documented technical interfaces, so that people can write third-party open-source applications that work with them. If you have any concerns about the app spying on you or doing other nefarious things, you just review the source and build it yourself (or, more commonly, benefit from a trusted third party that has done the same).
