It is one of the first and most important lessons of demonology. The creatures you summon are only controlled and contained by the power invested in the circle. Cross the barrier, or even so much as damage a line, and the demon will be able to strike at you. And given that demons will stop at nothing to destroy any living thing, including the summoner, such an action is surely folly. Such errors have led to the untimely death of many an inexperienced, cocksure, or foolhardy practitioner, summoning powerful demons before they are ready.

But as with all rules, the hard and fast laws are sometimes made to be broken. There have always been whispers that, in some remote regions, behind closed doors, certain experienced summoners have managed to contact particular hellish denizens who are more amenable to contact with mortals. Those who might look the other way, and spare a summoner’s life should they cross into the circle, in exchange for certain mutual benefits. It is rumoured that those benefits are long, involved, and extremely demanding, and that only the most potent of summoners can endure them. Although such words hardly need to be spoken to those familiar with the art, having seen for themselves the spectacular strength, size, and sheer raw power inherent to so many demons.
