After a big life change, when everything around you feels different, falling back into a familiar activity can make life feel the littlest bit more stable and comfortable.

On the first night in their new home, after moving cross-country to a new city, Tuxley and his mother leave the stacks of boxes in need of unpacking for tomorrow, and settle in to wind down their day in the usual manner.

His mother had read classic science fiction novels to Tuxley since he was a newborn. Since then, Tuxley's own love of sci-fi has grown quickly, along with his reading ability. They now take turns reading each chapter. His mother couldn't be more proud of how far his reading has come, and how enraptured he's become with the same stories that have always stirred her imagination. You might say he was destined to inherit her love of classic sci-fi from the moment he was born. She chose to name him after her favorite science fiction author. With that decision, a name that was already significant to her took on an entirely new meaning and became the most important one in her life.

This came about while I was working on an entirely different series of images to go along with a little Tuxley story I had written months ago and was was planning on posting next. While I was cleaning up the images I was listening to an old sci-fi radio drama from the 50s and the idea for this sweet little moment lodged itself in my brain and wouldn't leave. The bit about him being named after a science fiction author was a fun detail I really liked that I think fits really well. It's not actually how I arrived at his name, but I did initially think of Huxley when I was thinking up names for him, though admittedly Aldous Huxley wasn't what led me there.

The image itself turned out similar to the one I did for the Night Before the Move story, but I like it regardless, and I love any excuse to show his mom being incredibly nurturing and supportive.

I don't know what it was about this prompt, but I kept getting really messy images with obvious errors. I did my best to pick one I liked and clean up the worst parts of it.
