I've never really gone over my polished commission pawcess, so revisiting Discord's Dinner Date is a nice opportunity to show some of the behind-the-scenes (especially since some more stuff might be coming out at some point in the next week or so :3c)

Draft phase is a chance to iron out details and decide on final poses, and to expand on details that might have gotten left out of the thumbnails. Once again, a big aspect that I emphasize with my polished pieces is that details do not need to be set in stone: because I charge hourly there isn't a point where my clients can no longer ask about changes, as they're aware that that doing so might increase the time and cost of the piece.

I think of these stages as zeroing in on a final picture. We start out with rough concepts, and then in thumbnails revise them down into visual ideas. A lot more nuance and detail gets added during the rough draft. As just one example, you can see the addition of Pinkie Pie peeking out of Discord's ass in the first picture :3c

One of the things that was a lot of fun with these two pics is the sheer amount of stuff happening at the same time. Dimalad and I talked through each pony's reactions and tried to add little details for each one. This is another reason why I felt like it was ultimately a good decision to have the poop as separate piles per-pony: each pony could have their own individual experience and texture that reflected them <3
