Snow pressed softly against the windowpanes, the world outside muted and white, the night deep and endless. Inside Puss’ home, the fire burned low, casting slow shadows across the walls.

Death was here.

He lay stretched across the bed, pale fur glowing faintly in the firelight. A muzzle—dark leather, carefully fastened—wrapped around his snout, restraining both teeth and words. A leash ran from it, loose but unmistakably present, disappearing into Puss’ paw.

The scythe was nowhere to be seen.

“Well,” Puss said quietly, standing at the foot of the bed, “this is… new.”

Death’s red eyes flicked toward him, sharp and irritated—and beneath that, unmistakably amused. He tested the bindings once, wrists secured above his head, the bedframe creaking softly in protest. The restraints held.

Puss stepped closer, boots soft against the floorboards. He tugged the leash just enough to make a point.

“Do not look at me like that,” Puss said. “You came into my home. You ate my cookies. You mocked me.”

Death’s ears twitched. A low sound escaped the muzzle—half growl, half laugh.

“Oh, this?” Puss continued, circling the bed. “This is called consequences.”

He stopped beside Death, leaning down just enough to meet those glowing eyes. “Tell me,” he added lightly, “how does it feel… to be the one waiting?”

Death strained again, then stilled. His gaze softened, something dangerous and playful slipping through the irritation.

Control, it seemed, did not sit entirely wrong on him.

Puss straightened, tail flicking with satisfaction. “Good,” he said. “We understand each other.”

Outside, the snow kept falling. Inside, the fire crackled, shadows dancing slowly over the walls as the night stretched on—long, quiet, and very much unfinished.
