What started as a peaceful sea-bound outing had quickly turned to a nightmarish fight for survival; Mutt had taken the boat out in a gentle breeze, but now, a fierce storm had taken him swiftly away - straight into a deadly torrent...
The winds whipped the sails with howling force. The husky strained with each powerful gust, direly directing the lines whichever way he could. It had gotten dark within the squall. The distant sunlight fell behind the rising waves, and the sky above stirred black. There was no way out the poor sailor could see. He simply struggled to stay on his paws...
As the hours passed, he would feel his hope begin to slip.
Within the churning chaos, Mutt's life-vest had disappeared, tumbling away just as the trouble was first starting. He had another one somewhere, but that too had escaped his sight. It was the one thought racking his head; a regret that would torture him until he went under...
And the time was coming.
Each wave bashed against the sailboat's weakening hull, threatening to capsize it at any moment. Mutt desperately attempted to stear the sails against the current, gripping the lines with one paw and the railing with another. He could muster for some time, but as his strength weakened, so did his will. Still holding the rope, he watched as a monstrous swell approached, hitting him broadside. The sailboat rocked again and again until...
*SPLASH*
Mutt was thrown from his perch, water crashing in from each and every direction. His senses were obliterated by the impact. His glasses cracked and washed away. The massive force knocked the air from his lungs.
"Arff- Ughglk!"
The husky coughed at the surface, feebly attempting to regain faculty. He paddled and wiped his eyes, the sting of salt blurring his vision. His head darted each way. Debris was everywhere. He saw the boat's port side bobbing up and down. Behind it, another wave.
SPLASH
Mutt flailed again, barking and whining as he reached air again. The vessel was going down. He needed something esle to cling on to: something afloat. He looked around, his gaze eventually landing on a loose couch cushion. Mutt swam frantically towards it, but suddenly...
"Argh!"
He was pulled backwards.
The husky looked down, pawing at stiffness around his right ankle. It was... rope. Mutt gasped. It was the mainsheet. It had tangled around the now-submerged mast as the boat capsized... It was also now wrapped around his footpaw.
Mutt panicked, pawing towards the cushion as it drifted slowly away; his last hope of staying afloat. One final swell approached, and with an anguished bark, the poor husky was smothered by the sea.
SPLASH
"MMMGL... MHH!"
Mutt flailed, his natural buoyancy now failing him. The surface was just above, the vessel and its captain now fully beneath.
"MBRK..."
Mutt snapped his muzzle, holding his breath with puffed cheeks. Looking down, he could see the rope pressing tightly against his fur. It wrapped several times around and in every which way...
Below, the strands pulled taut, stringing around the mast in confusing clumps.
Below that - the endless expanse of nothingness... a darkness that was due to engulf him.
"MMMMGH!"
The husky hurried, hopelessly tugging away at the line. His paws fumbled around the fibers, and his claws struggled to slice through the knots. Without his glasses, Mutt wasn't sure which ropes went where.
To make things worse, the waves hadn't stopped their wailing. Just as Mutt made progress, the swell would shove him, making him lose his grip and disorienting him further.
The seconds under turned to a minute. As the storm raged on, the ship began to slump further into the depths. Bubbles rushed out the cracks between the deck boards, and the whole hull began to crumple. As it sank, the mast pulled downwards, further tightening the knots that snagged the pupper. Mutt was doomed. He held his chest.
"Mggrck!"
The first contraction hit him hard. He leaned back up, shaken and dazed and in a whirlpool of pain. His paws fidgeted. He winced in discomfort. Screamed whines leaked through his pursed lips. He could feel the pressure building in his diaphragm. Another contraction was immanent. He cried in anticipation.
"MgGLRK!"
This one hit harder. A spurt of bubbles trickled out his nose, his fuzzy head now slammed with painful throbs.
"MGLRGLP-"
"MGLurK!!!"
Another set hit him immediately after. The husky covered his airways, watching helplessly as more air had escaped him. The bubbles rose turbulently to the surface, only less than a foot above him.
He strained and struggled, writhing woefully to reach them. His vision blurred. His energy waned. No. It was too late...
Mutt looked back down, his mind racing. His tail wagged in distress. His feet kicked and clawed. His paws dug deeply into his clenched maw. The dog cried in muffled despair. Another contraction hit. This time it was too much.
"GLARG- gllglhk!"
He breathed in a short, burning burst. He felt it wash down his throat, a small bit entering his windpipe. He coughed instinctively, and then it was over.
"BARGLGLARGLglglllglhk!"
Mutt's eyes widened. His paws shot upwards in panicked paddles. His mouth went wide open.
"BLLGLGARK-BARLK GLBLUHGL!"
Bubbles exploded from his maw, life bursting out of him. In it's place came the sea. It entered him fiercely.
"GLUG- hic* GLUGG- hic* GLuh..."
It burst through his throat and quickly into his trachea, splashing between his lungs. He continued coughing and heaving, the water too much to overcome. Shortly, it began to invade other parts of him, seeping into his stomach and weighing him further. He sucked it through his nose, his high-pitched whines now smothered and waterlogged.
"Hhhhh- hic* hyhhhhhhhg... hic*..."
The life in his eyes began to fade, now blinking and droopy. His tail swished limply, and his arms started to sink outwards.
"hhhh... hhhh... hh..."
The husky's labored breaths began to steady, the water now fully within him. His canines reflected off the pale sky. His ears flopped listlessly with the current. His paws steadied, and the whining finally stopped...
"h..."
Mutt's body became still, trace breaths sucking in every once and a while. His consciousness had left, but while it did, he could only remorse... What had started as such a nice day... If only he was more careful... If only he...
...
His body remained tethered to the boat as it sank, suspended within the draped entanglement of torn sails. His vessel would come to rest at some point, his corpse settling somewhere within the murky depths. Up above remained only traces of his trip: a journey cut short, and a dog lost forever.
