To build on this: People who fight in life-or-death situations and then have to fight in competitions absolutely have to moderate their skills. Probably not as many "shadow swords that literally bisect people" uses of magic in the competition arena compared to fighting slavers in the woods.

Fens to used to street brawls. She's a quick learner so I imagine she's gonna pick up on the rules quick and start really getting into shorter more effective castings that suit her. P.s.
