Well it is still a regular rpg. Their are going to be limitations based on the medium on what it can do.
It also wouldn't make sense from a story telling or lore perspective if the SOUL were to suddenly act without our input to go to Dess's room if the implication is that the SOUL is the player.
I just assume that that Noelle was repeatedly having a hard time finding the hamster cage with an ever present Susie constantly distracting her.

i know, I'm just saying that at least to me the way Toby handled them not discovering the soul felt a bit forced in terms of the story (and like you said it probably is because of gameplay limitations).
Ironically it doesn't match the art, but is it just me or do Susie's teeth in that sprite in ch4 actually imply she's been brushing more? She definitely had yellow-er teeth before like the art depicts. Unless it's just some mis-coloration since the scene is so dark somehow, but I feel like it'd make sense with her character growth if her teeth aren't naturally yellow even when clean, especially when so many of her later weapons are toothbrushes in the Light World lol

I think nothing is going to stop them... unless you do the Weird Route...

The same way you can wait for them in the basement, they will be 'looking for you' and talking, but story won't progress cause it's a game

That's fair i guess but it is true that if you don't move at all after they leave absolutely nothing happens (there's even a video showing that after waiting more than 10 minutes irl they don't come back to check on the angel doll).

They do come back.
Noelle leaves to look for her old hamster cage (presumably a tactic to change the subject away from talking about her dream of Susie). Susie follows Noelle, leaving the SOUL unattended allowing us to escape. We go to Dess's room, get snipped by Kris which makes a sound with the guitar that both Susie & Noelle here. Presumably offscreen they come back to check the living room, exclaim that they see the angel figure is on the ground empty & Noelle figures the sound came from Dess's room & they go in.
That said from a storytelling standpoint yes they didn't want to reveal the SOUL to other characters yet. I'm guessing that's going to be a Ch5 or Ch6 reveal.

Strange how they never really go back to check what was on the angel doll
our soul
like the game coincidentally didn't want them to find out about it yet.
