Crystals have always been an important part of Pokemon culture and society. Used even before the creation of the first crystal generator, evolution stones were sought after for their mystical power to cause evolution. That is still done today. However, even the most useless of gems now have a place thanks to decades of research and development. Just like how crystals can change Pokemon, Pokemon can change crystals.

Gemology became the path to the stars. While crystals were first used to simply power other technology, researchers eventually discovered that Pokemon can engrave a purpose into gemstones. The actual process can take days to complete depending on the complexity of the intended purpose, and it took countless fruitless attempts to fully comprehend the flexibility crystals have. However, with enough time, energy, and intent any crystal can be used for any purpose. From networks of mystical aura lines that keep an amorphous ship stable to a deadly weapon that can destroy entire cities, crystals are a key component in practically every part of a modern spaceship.

Of all ship components, communications are the most complex. Due to the complexity of life, it is rare to find two spacefaring races with the same form of communication technology. This creates a tech language barrier that has to be crossed before one even has the chance to break the traditional one. Due to this, communication crystals are often the longest to make in the first place and the least likely to stay unchanged throughout a ship’s lifespan. Even with additional mechanical aid, communication crystals are often seen as the most annoying part of a ship to maintain.

This annoying problem means that it is often customary for captains to engage in some stress relief before engaging with the complicated systems. A minor mistake in one part of the system could result in massive damage to another. Limiting the amount of stress one has while working with this ship component is of the upmost importance, as even a small emotional outburst could result in a horrible chain reaction. That being said, captains should be wary about what they do while working on communications. It is not uncommon for ships working on such systems to transmit messages when they near or reach work completion.
