The icy shock shot through him, stunning him briefly. He was quick to come to, but in those handful of seconds, the stream had pulled him several yards away from the dock.\n\nSurfacing with a gasp, Kip paddled against the current, attempting desperately to return to shore. To the bird's worry, however, his frantic flails and flaps were quickly becoming smothered by the weight of his winter coat. He was hardly a good swimmer as-is, but with his thick winter clothes on... Kip began to panic. He splashed and struggled, but he couldn't avoid it. He couldn't swim. Not dressed like this. He squawked fearfully, crying out as he slowly slipped beneath the water.\n\nKip waved his arms and kicked furiously, fighting in agony to get himself out. He was able to resurface a few times, but soon, he was stuck just inches below the surface, fatigue quickly setting in. The dock was far out of sight now, the shoreline hidden behind the currents that had pulled him further and further out. The bird was horrified. He chirped out watery bubbles, fresh air barely out of reach.\n\nSuddenly, Kip began to convulse. The cold seeped in through his feathers, shaking him violently. Bubbles escaped from his chattering beak. In a last ditch effort, he tried unzipping his jacket, but his fingers kept slipping, and the zipper was frozen in place. He ripped at his coat, reaching for the surface, screaming as air finally escaped his mouth.\n\nNot like this, he pleaded. He didn't want to die. Not here...\n\nKip's fear turned to pain as the water rushed inside him. He gagged and squawked, his movements more spastic. Tears floated from his eyes as his body filled, the icy chill consuming him completely. His thoughts raced, but only for a moment... He sunk further, the moonlight fading above... all hope of rescue gone.\n\nThe bird's frigid feathers fluttered in the current, his vibrant yellow eyes becoming dim. He heaved and sucked deep breaths of blue, the cold numbing him to it all. Soon, his consciousness would flicker away, and his breaths would slow to a long draw. Kip's swim was over, as was his night.\n\nSeveral days would pass before his body was found - washed up and slumped over miles down-stream - still bundled up in that heavy winter coat.\n[/section]\n\nPoor bird!\nMy chronic pain is not as bad now.
