It's been this way since they were first printed; the 2e monstrous manual has them as a more powerful evolution with a similar description in the lich entry and the original demilich (Acererak himself) was introduced to campaigns as more powerful than a regular lich. Demiliches are a deliberate evolution of liches, something that you turn into on purpose by (though some canonical demiliches had alternate methods they kept in their backstories in non-default campaign settings) crafting soulgems and filling them up. If you want an exact quote summing it up, I'd suggest:\n[quote]Particularly powerful liches sometimes learn the secret of fashioning soul gems, and so evolve to demilichdom.[/quote]\nMedea is a particularly powerful lich. This series is in large about eating souls.\n\nAlso liches don't eat souls to sustain themselves: the lich ritual has no upkeep. The misunderstanding is a 5Eism - some of the FR liches have had that, but that was their personal peculiarity. The reason liches are associated with eating souls is because Acererak (the demilich) was eating souls to ascend to divinity.\n\nIf you've seen the image of a jeweled skeletal hand that's a depiction of a specific demilich that's a 31st level wizard.",
