"description": "
First drawing I’ve done in a long time. I hope you like it ❤️💛🖤
\n\n
The animals featured are a bilby and a numbat, and the dots in the top right are a flock of rainbow lorikeets. I recommend googling all those animals because they’re all very cute and loveable in my opinion 🙂
\n\n
For my international friends who are wondering what this is about: today is “Australia Day”, which is kind of like the 4th of July and Columbus Day smushed together into one thing. It is the day Europeans arrived in Australia.
\n\n
Most Aboriginal people and allies don’t celebrate Australia Day, because European occupation of Australia has been pretty similar to how it’s been for Native Americans in the US: a long series of sick, inhuman acts of cruelty, with the aim of erasure by mass murder and forced assimilation.
\n\n
Instead of “Australia Day”, we call it “Survival Day”, a defiant assertion that despite settler-colonialists’ best efforts to wash their hands of it and pretend it was never even here, Aboriginal culture still exists and isn’t going anywhere. We summarise this sentiment with the words “Always was, always will be Aboriginal land”.
\n"
