"body": "
\"mairo\":/users/38571 said:\nGIF is lossless image format from 90's, which means it's gonna be fucking massive regardless of what you do. \nThat format should've died decades ago, yet it's still somehow alive and platforms are trying to cope by just converting all GIFs to MP4 video files and just labeling them as GIF. \n \nThere are ways to optimize the animation to be lower filesize, first is disabling dithering which can introduce color banding artifacts (like it has here) but making animation simpler, which makes it easier to save, which also reduces filesize as it's easier to compress losslessly. \nSecond is general animation optimization, meaning every single frame the stuff that does not alter from previous frame, you make them alpha channel so it simply shows the previous frames for that part. For this, lossless source files should be used as lossy compression introduces invisible to eye artifacts bloating the filesize, but also artistical decisions that reduce movement between frames, e.g. no noise filters, fade in/out, gradients, color changes, etc. With this animation the file optimization is already done, there's bunch of fully alpha channel frames and all disposal is combine so to optimize further, artwork would need to be changed which is not a solution usually. \nBasically, you cannot make this any smaller outside of reducing something like resolution or amount of colors from already low 256 to something even lower. \n\nThis is also why the GIF filesize has been deliberately capped at 20MB here, because if you are hitting that limit, you most likely should've used something else entirely to begin with. \n\nIf you really want to keep it as image, we have supported APNG for decade and WebP support was introduced some months ago. APNG can losslessly compress so much better and has full color support (also there's software like Pingo that can crunch the filesize down even more with no alteration to the animation), WebP is even better but also allows lossy compression. \n\nAs this is almost whole minute long, you could simply use video formats instead, VP9 WebM has been supported for long time and AV1 MP4 is now also supported. Videos are lossy formats, so there can be visible compression and chroma (colors) are quartered which can makes some areas look fuzzier, but with slow and good encoding settings and high bitrates, it should look as good as lossless image does. \n
\n\nyeah i wanted to upload the APNG here but because i did this in a very unoptimized way ( way too many layer files that got so convoluted fixing it so the layers were flattened would be nearly on par with simply reanimating every frame gah ) it ended up too big of a file even if i made the file quite small. dithering wasn't selected on the export, it just came out looking that way regardless. last time i tried to export a video from clip studio it wasn't behaving myself, that might be a PC /memory issue though, my PC is a piece of trash haha\n\nI learned a lot about animation in this project and while i have zero plan of doing something this complex again any time soon i'll wrangle it into submission next time i do, knowing what i do now - flattening the layers earlier in the progress would reduce the file size significantly i'm sure\n\nthanks for the info!\n\n",
