We had bumped into each other that morning, only somewhat acquainted, and he told me about how he was visiting the island in the hopes that he might find the mayor there. He was worried about him, understandably so, considering how buddy-buddy the two of them have been. He said that I was “clearly one of his good friends too”, which I didn’t have the heart to tell him otherwise. [/i]\n\n[i]Personally, I haven’t missed having him around. Several weeks without seeing his goofy face or hearing him scream like a girl at the sight of yet another beehive… it’s been nice. But even I have to admit that his absence can be felt in a negative way. I mean, he is the mayor after all, he’s supposed to be running this place. The girl in Town Hall does the best she can (his secretary I think?), but there’s only so many jobs she can juggle by herself.[/i]\n\n[i]And so, because of this, and a deadly combination of boredom and morbid curiosity, I joined Simon on his quest. The first thing that caught my attention when we arrived at Tortimer Island was just how… summer-y it was, despite it being the middle of autumn. Bright blue skies, shining ocean and good grief the temperature. It’s as if just the right combination of chemical reactions caused the formation of an island in just the perfect spot as to where it was an endless summer all year.[/i]\n\n[i]After being heckled by a little girl who seemed way to eager to play capitalism, we walked out onto the beach and, sure enough, there he was, lounging on a deck chair with a smoothie in his hand. He was surprised to see us – alarmed, some might say. We explained the situation, I made sure he knew that we wanted answers.[/i]\n\n[i]“Emotional recovery” was what he told us. Too much was happening at once and when you’re “knee deep in the world of politics, a local death can bring your entire mental stability to ruin”. Of course, I wasn’t totally convinced given how this break had already lasted a month and that the mayor and Gruff didn’t exactly get along in the first place. Believe me, I never took ageism seriously until I saw those two talk to one another.[/i]\n\n[i]Before we could press any more information out of him, he insisted that we join him in a ‘tour’ or two. Tours, for those that don’t know, is Tortimer Island’s idea of fun. These activities range from hitting stray balloons with a sling shot, diving for rocks, or searching for spoilt fruit in a maze. The mayor insisted, with disturbing enthusiasm, that we partake in the latter. The game wasn’t too bad in concept, but he entered us in the “master” level labyrinth, which was way too hard for any of us. Seriously, we had to fetch three of three different kinds of fruit in a complicated series of hedges and it all just got me frustrated and tired. Like, hooray, we know where the mayor is now, can we go home? We didn’t leave completely empty handed though – Tortimer gave us 3 medals for doing our best. Medals are the currency here and three of them could buy me approximately nothing. Both Simon and the Mayor seemed to have fun regardless. Too much fun. It was sickening.[/i]\n\n[i]“When do you think you’re coming back, man?” Simon asked as we boarded Kapp’n’s boat when the sun was beginning to set.[/i]\n\n[i]“Eh” the Mayor shrugged “probably next week or something… I dunno.”[/i]\n\n[i]“Just don’t forget” I said sternly “you are the one running the town. You have responsibilities.”[/i]\n\n[i]“Yeah, yeah, I know that” he said dismissively “I’m sure Isabelle’s been managing fine without me anyways. I won’t leave her for much longer. Now go on, before Kapp’n falls asleep again!”[/i]\n\n[i]“Yarr, I was just resting me eyes…”[/i]\n\n[i]He waved us off as the boat left the harbour before scurrying back inside the hut.[/i]\n[i] In retrospect, where else could he have been? He’s been obsessed with that island ever since Tortimer first showed it to him. People where spreading rumours that he had disappeared off the face of the Earth or hopped on a train to who-knows-where. These rumours got so out of hand, that Isabelle actually went ahead and contacted the town of Whoknowswhere as a representative of Place just to check![/i]\n\n[i]Still, the reasons for him being there still come off as fishy to me, and its not because I’m currently in the middle of the ocean listening to a crusty ol’ sea dog sing to me. I don’t think Simon buys it either. Poor guy wants to give the mayor the benefit of the doubt, but there’s no denying that there was some serious deflecting going on today. Will he come back soon? Simon seems to think so, but I’m not convinced. Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see…[/code][/i]\n\n\n~Author’s Notes~\n We made it to #50!\n This will be my last post of the year/decade, and I thank you all for sticking with me so far. The 20’s are gonna be an exciting time for me personally, and whether or not that includes this DA account or not is yet to be seen, but I’ll make sure to redirect my followers should my main output of content move elsewhere.
