They’re silly things, aren’t they?\n And no, I’m not about to advocate for their removal from modern society or anything like that, but you can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she likes to dress – it’s one of the many things that sets us apart from the feral.[/i]\n\n[i]My mother, for instance, likes to be fully dressed from head to paw. To her, clothing brings with it a sense of modesty and refinement. My dad, meanwhile, he’s content with just a shirt on his back – as most people tend to be, of course. Moving to Place more or less proved to me that most would rather cover themselves with a single item of clothing instead of going the extra mile to buy shoes and pants. The Mayor and his assistant are two of the exceptions I’ve seen, along with the other dog who stands outside of the happy home showcase thingy and the racoon who runs the housing agency. Tom, I think his name was. They all go the extra mile with clothes. Maybe it’s a class thing?[/i]\n\n[i]In some ways, I take after my mum, as I like to cover most of my body. I’ve never cared much for shoes though – they always felt weird on my paws. I bring all of this up because today I went to the Able Sister’s quaint little shop for some recreational shopping. Ugh, I sound so pretentious when I describe it that way, but that’s honestly all it was as I had no real intention to buy anything specific.[/i]\n\n[i]The seamstress, Sable her name is, she’s nice. I’m always impressed by the speed at which she works but those eyes of hers are the very definition of tired. Her younger sister (who still elders me in age) is far bubblier but thankfully not in an annoying way, as chipper shopkeepers tend to be sometimes. The three of us had an interesting conversation about clothes and how they can tell you more about somebody than words can. Looking at the Ables, you can tell that their family business is what’s most important to them, given their no-thrills attire of but a simple apron. It was nice to have a nice, long, mentally stimulating conversation for a change, I should visit more often[/i]\n\n[i]Stepping out of their shop, however, was when my daily dose of weird finally arrived. And no, this time the shaven ape wasn’t even involved.[/i]\n \n[i]“Morning neighbour!” a short and rather rugged pink bear called from beside a dull-eyed hippo. “Brilliant weather, isn’t it? Yes.”[/i]\n \n[i]“Hmm” I nodded. “It sure is spring.”\n[/i]\n[i]“Indeed” he chuckled. It sounded like gravel in my ears. “My, when the heat begins to rise in a couple months, we will require a drinking fountain of some sort, yes?”[/i]\n\n[i]“I suppose that would be nice” I said, clutching the straps of my bag.[/i]\n \n[i]“I don’t suppose you have any other ideas as to what could be added to the town, hm?” he asked. “Place has adopted the public works project system, yes? Had any suggestions you hope to run by the mayor one day? Or perhaps you would rather he change which ordinance goes into effect this season? Tell me, are you more of a bell boomer or a beautiful towner? These are the ordinances I have heard about. Yes.”[/i]\n\n[i]I felt as if I was being interrogated by one of those pesky salespeople. Had Place already become so metropolitan over night?[/i]\n \n[i]“Are you two a pair of government representatives or something?” I asked, squinting a curious eye upon them.[/i]\n\n[i]“Why, of course not, my friend!” the bear chuckled once more. “I am but the new neighbour in town! The one opposite the shabby wooden bridge? Call me Vladimir.”[/i]\n\n[i]“Ah yes” I said “the reason why the mayor was in such a bad mood the other day. And who’s that? Your husband?”[/i]\n\n[i]Another hollow laugh. “You are funny, Miss…?”[/i]\n[i]\n“Let’s keep it at ‘Miss’”[/i]\n\n[i]He winced a little after that – clearly, he felt as if he was being challenged and was trying his best to keep his hidden rage in check. I’ve known a lot of people like this Vladimir throughout my life. They’re unpleasant but ultimately quite harmless.[/i]\n\n[i]“Yes, yes, very good” he hissed. “But you know Rocco, don’t you? He’s been living here for a while now. So, he tells me anyway.”[/i]\n\n[i]“Hullo Miss Yuka!” his dopey companion waved.[/i]\n\n[i]“Wrong koala” I muttered. “And no, I’ve never see that guy before in my life.”[/i]\n[i]\nVladimir blinked. “He… does not have residency in this town?”[/i]\n\n[i]I shook my head.[/i]\n\n[i]“Umm… uhhh…” Rocco began to whine like a distressed whale “I am very good buddies with the mayor! A-and we get up to so much… I-I mean we go way back—”[/i]\n\n[i]“Such a joker is he!” Vladimir exclaimed, leaning into his friend with a hard jab of his elbow. “Why, you’ve always been a mister comedian, haven’t you? Yes…”[/i]\n\n[i]“I gotta go” I grumbled, and hastily paced away from the two of them. It wasn’t until I was out of sight that I swore I heard Vladimir speak once more. I couldn’t make out the words, but they were harsh and angry sounding.[/i]\n\n[i]Rocco wore a shirt with yellow and black stripes – the trademark sign of caution. And if there’s anything you need to know about judging people by what they wear, never trust a grown man who dresses in multicoloured polka-dots.[/i]\n \n\n~Author’s Notes~\n I know its probably a little weird to meditate on how clothing is seen in the animal crossing world, but it was a shower thought I had the other day that I thought would be interesting to touch upon in an episode of My Place.\n\nI don’t wanna go too crazy when it comes to over-analysing and ‘explaining’ certain elements of the game’s lore and world building, but I think there’s some untapped potential here that’s worth exploring. \n\nAlso: I still really hate drawing buildings.
