Any step toward becoming your best self is worth celebrating after all, especially with the colorful cast of uninhibited friends he elected to spend his night with: the asexual sphinx cat who wore nothing but his “Virginity Rocks” beanie, the genderfluid bunny in pink and white lingerie, the gay wolf who was always the first one naked, and the aforementioned dragon and dog, both topless. They lived all across the country, but that never stopped them from enjoying these clothing-optional game nights.
\n\n
“You alright, dude?” the cat asked. “You look ready to pass out.”
\n\n
He rubbed his digits along the slowly brewing ache in his temples. Reluctant as he was to bid his friends goodbye, he was on his twentieth hour without sleep and a glance at the time only further hammered that truth home.
\n\n
“Shit, is it really 2am already?”
\n\n
“Two? …Oh, right. East coast,” the wolf asked and answered.
\n\n
“Yeah, I think I’m gonna log off for now,” he concluded. “Was nice hangin’. See y’all next week.”
\n\n
A flurry of waving hands and vocal goodbyes flooded his monitor and speakers before he disconnected. Powering down his computer, the avian shuffled into bed. Tired as he was, however, his mind still rushed from the camaraderie with his colorful cast of queers.
\n\n
Heh, queer, his mind mumbled. When he first learned the word as a kid, his well-meaning mother told him it was an outdated term for gay people. Funny how history repeats itself, his online friends using the term to define themselves. So many flags with so many colors, nonetheless united under a single word. Made him happy to be a part of such a loving community…
\n\n
He was… part of it, right? He heard multiple times that our experiences seldom define us, and yet his lingering mind plagued him with his lack of male partnership, past and present. He shook his head against his pillow as he wrestled his internalized biphobia. He couldn’t be straight; nothing was straight about ogling his naked friends all night… with their permission, of course.
\n\n
After all, they were exhibitionists, too. And people pleaser that he was, the avian thrived on letting them be seen, whether it was teasing the slender sphinx or complimenting the wolf’s tight track-and-field ass. He especially took pleasure in noting how much bigger the trans dog’s chest has gotten since the last hangout. Instant euphoria. Almost made him jealous with how happy it made her…
\n\n
Jealous of being a woman? But… no. He’s asked these questions before. He even tried on dresses at the thrift store. Despite his best efforts, he was still a male… or at least masc-leaning… what would he even do if he had a femme side? It’s not like being non-binary would help him, give him more job opportunities or make his dating life more romantic… not that romance really worked for him.
\n\n
Well, Perci was an exception, but… what label could he put on his relationship? Boyfriend and girlfriend? Partners? Friends with benefits? He was always hesitant to initiate that conversation. Regardless, now was not the time to think about it.
\n\n
Restless in the head, he turned over and reached for his phone, turning on the white noise app before setting it back down on the charging pad. Ocean waves to wash away his worries. In his mind’s eye, he was sunbathing on a blanket spread across the clothing-optional sands of Cherry Grove beach. He smiled as he recalled his last trip to Fire Island. Even before stepping off the ferry, he couldn’t move ten paces in any direction without spotting a pride flag. Bulletin boards were plastered with ads for upcoming drag show performances and special events at nightclubs. Hell, one of the stores even sold poppers! Sure, he was there to get naked on the beach, but the sights and sounds of the boardwalk truly instilled that sense of pride within him…
\n\n
But was he rea—
\n\n
“Enough, dammit!” He swore at his thoughts, shooting back up and opening his eyes.
\n\n
The beach was gone… and so was his bedroom. Instead, the avian stood in nothingness. To his left and right, the void stretched on. Above him and below as well. His other senses failed him as well. No bedroom scents or ocean sounds. No winds, warmth or cold. All that existed was his form, bare as he had left it.
\n\n
“Hello?” He called out.
\n\n
Not even an echo responded to him.
\n\n
“Hellooooooo!” he cried louder.
\n\n
“Hello.”
\n\n
He spun around, “Who’s there?”
\n\n
“Why… you are!” a flamboyant voice answered.
\n\n
Following the sound, he was greeted with the sight of a flag floating in the air, sporting three equally sized stripes of magenta, yellow, and cyan. The avian recognized this as the pansexual pride flag, the one he always proudly waved during pride.
\n\n
As it slowly circled the bird, the flag continued, “But I guess that leaves the question: who are you?”
\n\n
“I…” still attempting to comprehend the scenario, he failed to produce the words to respond.
\n\n
“It can’t be that hard of a question, can it?” Another flag flew into his vision. This one sky blue and pink with a white stripe in the center: the trans flag. “Let’s start with the basics. Are you a boy or a girl? You look like a boy but… that’s not always the case.”
\n\n
Again, he remained silent.
\n\n
“Why do you assume they’re either a boy or a girl?” another voice spoke.
\n\n
From his left, the avian found the source of the rebuttal floating across his visage: yellow, white, violet, and black.
\n\n
“For all we know, they could be both, or neither, or something in between.”
\n\n
“You know,” yet another flag joined in, this one adorned in oddly darker colors with a yellow pi symbol, “gender isn’t the only thing that defines a person. Maybe we should ask them about who they love.”
\n\n
“Ha, love,” chided the shades of green and gray in the corner of the parrot’s eye, “some of us can get by just fine without it, you know?”
\n\n
Yet another voice piped up, this one in asexual tones, “What are you talking about? Love is amazing! If anything, it’s intimacy that’s problematic.”
\n\n
“Oh, don’t say that,” comforted a flag in similar colors, but in a different pattern. “Maybe they just haven’t found the right connection yet.”
\n\n
“What’s to connect?” asked the various hues of blue and green, “All that matters is if the guy is attractive, right?”
\n\n
“Or if the woman is attractive!” corrected the pansexual symbol.
\n\n
“Or the enby is attractive!” the non-binary flag added.
\n\n
“Why are you all shouting?” the polyamorous one questioned. “They can all be attractive!”
\n\n
“Oh, what does it matter?” the ace symbol bemoaned.
\n\n
“Not all of us have given up, you know!”
\n\n
The voices began overlapping one another, into a cacophony of arguments and retorts. Shutting his eyes and covering the sides of his head did little to mute them. The circling of the conure evolved into spinning, creating a whirlwind around him. Cry after cry, each voice rang louder against the avian’s auriculars until it was too much.
\n\n
“ENOUGH!!”
\n\n
With the avian’s roar, the colors silenced themselves and slowed to a standstill.
\n\n
“Why are you all fighting over who I am? I already know who I am! My name is Patrigue, and I’m a cisgender, pansexual, polyamorous, male half-moon conure… but sometimes, I don’t feel like it…”
\n\n
He looked towards the gay men’s flag, “Sometimes, I worry whether I like boys or girls more…”
\n\n
Then to the gray and purple ones, “Sometimes, I feel like I don’t like anything… or very rarely like anything…”
\n\n
Finally, he turned to the gendered flags, “Sometimes, I see how happy my trans friends are about transitioning, and I wonder if that would make me feel the same way…”
\n\n
He closed his eyes and resumed, “but that’s life, isn’t it? Doubting yourself and trying to figure things out? I mean, maybe I’m a little too old to still be questioning these things, but… hey, it’s not like I have all the answers. Nobody does. So… sorry I can’t give you the answers you want right now, and I don’t know when I’ll know them. Hell, I might never know… but I won’t let it hold me back.”
\n\n
It was with those words that he opened his eyes and woke up.
\n",
