"description": "Poor bug pokémon. They get such a bad rap. When they’re not weak, they’re weird. Most people think of them as “starter” or “baby’s first” pokémon. You know, the kind parents catch for their kids because they’re low on maintenance and danger. But as trainers advance, most of them ditch bugs, and honestly, can you blame them? Bug types are often operate in colonies, which doesn’t translate well to one-on-one battles. And they’re not all that flashy when it comes to battle either. Winning because your opponent fell asleep after a light powdering? LAME. Speed drops? YAWN. Binds? SNORE.\n\nOutside of battle, the sun isn’t any shinier. Bug pokémon just can’t compete with fighting, rock, or steel types when it comes to labor. Flying and water types have them beat in transport. And many of them just can’t match the kind of functional power output that dedicated fire or electric types provide. Bugs are primarily useful for farming and, uh… silk? And let’s be real here: they’re BUGS. Skittering, dead-eyed, eldritch bugs. When it comes to cute, cuddly, or cool, the bedrock of each of those tier lists is going to be littered with bug pokémon. The only naysayers are specialists or weirdos who look at a bug and think “Ah, just like me.” Pile on sensitive environmental requirements, and you have a family of pokémon that is more of a ghost at the top than ACTUAL ghost-types!\n\nThat’s why you so often see Scyther as kind of the “face” for bug-types. For starters, Scythers actually HAVE a face to [i]be[/i] a face while still maintaining a bug-like image. Second, watching a Scyther battle is a spectacle that is ironic in how you CAN’T see them! Scythers are renowned for their speed and agility, and with such awe- and fear-inducing blades on their arms, any battle involving a Scyther is like watching the climactic final battle of a samurai movie every minute!\n\nBut for every Scyther with a trainer who can dish out commands with the speed of an auctioneer, there are five more in pokémon adoption centers because their trainers wanted to hug their bug and ended up in the back of an ambulance. Which is why I am providing you with a few excerpts from Dr. Chuck Hayworth’s [i]Blade Dance: A Treatise On Scythers For Home And Field[/i]!\n\n[q]Unlike many mammalian pokémon, Scythers do not interact with objects using their mouths to compensate for a lack of fingers. On one hand (pardon the pun), that means they’re highly adept to a life without hands. But on the other hand, you live in a human world, and if you’re going to bring a Scyther into a human world, be ready to intervene for any of the contraptions, obstacles, and luxuries it comes with which you don’t want diced like tomatoes. And while blade guards exist for Scythers, wearing them often comes at the price of your Scyther’s dignity and morale, as their blades are integral to their identity and pride. In short, if you cannot be a valet, you should not be a Scyther trainer.\n\nPeople underestimate the amount of work, dedication, and enthusiasm that is required for raising Scythers. And if the accolades for a hard-won battle aren’t enough, it can be pretty thankless! Scythers are highly territorial in the wild, fiercely competitive even among each other, and viciously aggressive in combat. They are difficult to bring to heel, and when they are, they have the typical stoic, aloof, impossible-to-read facade bugs are famous for. Want a pokémon who will snuggle up with you on the couch while binge-watching Chancey’s Kitchen? Look elsewhere. A pokémon who can party? Maybe if you need something to make sure people steer clear of the china cabinet. Just want to know what your pokémon is thinking? Unless that message can be delivered by slicing something clean in half, don’t hold your breath because Scyther is a book that is closed. And locked.\n\nBut Scythers are not robots. They have needs, they have emotions, and they ARE grateful for the care they are given! Especially the kind of care that requires hands. And you’ll be SURPRISED how much a bug needs, so I hope you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty.\n\n[...]\n\nGrooming is another aspect of Scyther upbringing a trainer should be well-prepared for both physically and mentally. Humans exist in a world tread by people and pokémon from all over. Littering, tracking dirt, the hot air of urbanization carrying all manners of substances and diseases foreign and unnatural-- a far cry from life in the cool, clean, shaded, pristine forests Scythers are accustomed to. So just how filthy can a bug get in such an environment, you may ask? The answer is VERY.\n\nIn the wild, Scythers are hunting carnivores who eat what they kill, so unless you want your Scyther to prey on your neighbors’ pets, you’ll be feeding them either fresh meat from Pokémarts or, should fresh meat not be available, engineered nutrient meals with a balance of B6. Should you choose the latter, it will be your duty to maintain your Scyther’s oral hygiene by brushing his teeth and tongue regularly, as the filler in nutrient meals tends to cause plaque build-ups, saliva-thickening, tongue residue, and leave other material that, while not a danger to Scythers themselves, can decay and curdle in the enzyme-rich environment of a Scyther’s mouth, leading to a what is colloquially called “Scyther breath” among specialists. And trust us when you say it’s worth preventing.\n\n[...]\n\nWings are not the only parts that are essential to a Scyther’s famous agility! A Scyther’s feet are tremendously important to a Scyther’s speed both in the air and on the ground. Broad soles, muscular toes, and gouging claws are capable of kicking Scyther from a standstill to a bullet in an instant. In the air, a Scyther’s feet can rebound Scyther off of vertical surfaces or the ground to change his trajectory in the blink of an eye, as well as acting as counterbalances to create sharp and unpredictable flight patterns. And if you think you’re safe just because their arm blades are facing away from you, think again; a kick from a Scyther can kill. We know because it has in the past. Before AND after ninjas, there were Scythers.\n\nBut all over such sizable, meaty paws and toes are numerous deep, fleshy nooks and pockets for dirt and shed skin to become trapped and packed. While the earth of the natural world does a good enough job cleaning that gunk out on its own, the human world is not so merciful for a change, creating the bug equivalent of what we’d commonly call toe jam. And if you think a bug’s feet can’t stink, your nose is in for the awakening of a lifetime. As a Scyther trainer, it is important that you give your Scyther regular foot baths with a cloth for the wide soles and a toothbrush for the creases and folds (though you may do so with your hands, in which case you are a credit to Scyther trainers everywhere). Though not a direct health issue for a Scyther, it will save him the embarrassment, because people nearby WILL mention it. So do him, your nosehairs, and those of everyone around him a favor.\n\n[...]\n\nSurely, you’ve heard the term “scytheskin,” and how it refers to a person whose unruly and flippant behavior often lands him in troublesome or hostile predicaments while somehow always managing to emerge from those situations unblemished. There are many rumors about the origin of the term, often involving protective gear farmers used to wear during harvest. That’s just a euphemism for its true origin: a male Scyther’s foreskin. The way Scythers avoid nicking themselves despite their massive arm blades, their bodies’ many protrusions, and their dance-like mobility is a marvel that eludes the greatest pokémon researchers. And the protrusion that causes most people to wince (particularly men) is male Scythers’ thick penis and wobbly scrotum flopping about in the middle of those slashing swords. Perhaps their miraculous evasion of their own weaponry (hence the etymology of the idiom) is why male Scythers’ reproductive organs have remained as supple as they are over the course of millennia, so you may notice when caring for your Scyther’s how pliant his foreskin is. It wiggles when it’s flicked, it stretches when it’s pulled, it rolls when you pinch it, and slipping a finger inside along the glans feels, to use another pun, as snug as a bug in a rug. \n\nSo what does that have to do with Scyther care? Nothing… as long as pokémon relief areas are well-equipped. Sometimes you will find yourself in a location with only the most basic provisions for pokémon needs, or only for very generalized pokémon-- and Scyther is a very specific specimen. Scythers are accustomed to urinating wherever they are currently standing, but a housebroken male Scyther may need your assistance in public facilities. While doing so, remember to pull your Scyther’s foreskin back all the way past his coronal ridge. Not only will this better direct your Scyther’s urine stream, this also allows you to inspect your Scyther’s penis at the same time for health and cleaning needs. If your Scyther’s foreskin is too tight to peel back all the way, he may have what is called “phimosis,” which is, quite simply, foreskin that is tighter than normal. Phimosis is no cause for alarm. As long as his penis’s natural functions are not inhibited, proceed regular Scyther care as normal. (See page 146 for more information on cleaning your Scyther’s genitals. "description": "Poor bug pokémon. They get such a bad rap. When they’re not weak, they’re weird. Most people think of them as “starter” or “baby’s first” pokémon. You know, the kind parents catch for their kids because they’re low on maintenance and danger. But as trainers advance, most of them ditch bugs, and honestly, can you blame them? Bug types are often operate in colonies, which doesn’t translate well to one-on-one battles. And they’re not all that flashy when it comes to battle either. Winning because your opponent fell asleep after a light powdering? LAME. Speed drops? YAWN. Binds? SNORE.\n\nOutside of battle, the sun isn’t any shinier. Bug pokémon just can’t compete with fighting, rock, or steel types when it comes to labor. Flying and water types have them beat in transport. And many of them just can’t match the kind of functional power output that dedicated fire or electric types provide. Bugs are primarily useful for farming and, uh… silk? And let’s be real here: they’re BUGS. Skittering, dead-eyed, eldritch bugs. When it comes to cute, cuddly, or cool, the bedrock of each of those tier lists is going to be littered with bug pokémon. The only naysayers are specialists or weirdos who look at a bug and think “Ah, just like me.” Pile on sensitive environmental requirements, and you have a family of pokémon that is more of a ghost at the top than ACTUAL ghost-types!\n\nThat’s why you so often see Scyther as kind of the “face” for bug-types. For starters, Scythers actually HAVE a face to [i]be[/i] a face while still maintaining a bug-like image. Second, watching a Scyther battle is a spectacle that is ironic in how you CAN’T see them! Scythers are renowned for their speed and agility, and with such awe- and fear-inducing blades on their arms, any battle involving a Scyther is like watching the climactic final battle of a samurai movie every minute!\n\nBut for every Scyther with a trainer who can dish out commands with the speed of an auctioneer, there are five more in pokémon adoption centers because their trainers wanted to hug their bug and ended up in the back of an ambulance. Which is why I am providing you with a few excerpts from Dr. Chuck Hayworth’s [i]Blade Dance: A Treatise On Scythers For Home And Field[/i]!\n\n[q]Unlike many mammalian pokémon, Scythers do not interact with objects using their mouths to compensate for a lack of fingers. On one hand (pardon the pun), that means they’re highly adept to a life without hands. But on the other hand, you live in a human world, and if you’re going to bring a Scyther into a human world, be ready to intervene for any of the contraptions, obstacles, and luxuries it comes with which you don’t want diced like tomatoes. And while blade guards exist for Scythers, wearing them often comes at the price of your Scyther’s dignity and morale, as their blades are integral to their identity and pride. In short, if you cannot be a valet, you should not be a Scyther trainer.\n\nPeople underestimate the amount of work, dedication, and enthusiasm that is required for raising Scythers. And if the accolades for a hard-won battle aren’t enough, it can be pretty thankless! Scythers are highly territorial in the wild, fiercely competitive even among each other, and viciously aggressive in combat. They are difficult to bring to heel, and when they are, they have the typical stoic, aloof, impossible-to-read facade bugs are famous for. Want a pokémon who will snuggle up with you on the couch while binge-watching Chancey’s Kitchen? Look elsewhere. A pokémon who can party? Maybe if you need something to make sure people steer clear of the china cabinet. Just want to know what your pokémon is thinking? Unless that message can be delivered by slicing something clean in half, don’t hold your breath because Scyther is a book that is closed. And locked.\n\nBut Scythers are not robots. They have needs, they have emotions, and they ARE grateful for the care they are given! Especially the kind of care that requires hands. And you’ll be SURPRISED how much a bug needs, so I hope you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty.\n\n[...]\n\nGrooming is another aspect of Scyther upbringing a trainer should be well-prepared for both physically and mentally. Humans exist in a world tread by people and pokémon from all over. Littering, tracking dirt, the hot air of urbanization carrying all manners of substances and diseases foreign and unnatural-- a far cry from life in the cool, clean, shaded, pristine forests Scythers are accustomed to. So just how filthy can a bug get in such an environment, you may ask? The answer is VERY.\n\nIn the wild, Scythers are hunting carnivores who eat what they kill, so unless you want your Scyther to prey on your neighbors’ pets, you’ll be feeding them either fresh meat from Pokémarts or, should fresh meat not be available, engineered nutrient meals with a balance of B6. Should you choose the latter, it will be your duty to maintain your Scyther’s oral hygiene by brushing his teeth and tongue regularly, as the filler in nutrient meals tends to cause plaque build-ups, saliva-thickening, tongue residue, and leave other material that, while not a danger to Scythers themselves, can decay and curdle in the enzyme-rich environment of a Scyther’s mouth, leading to a what is colloquially called “Scyther breath” among specialists. And trust us when you say it’s worth preventing.\n\n[...]\n\nWings are not the only parts that are essential to a Scyther’s famous agility! A Scyther’s feet are tremendously important to a Scyther’s speed both in the air and on the ground. Broad soles, muscular toes, and gouging claws are capable of kicking Scyther from a standstill to a bullet in an instant. In the air, a Scyther’s feet can rebound Scyther off of vertical surfaces or the ground to change his trajectory in the blink of an eye, as well as acting as counterbalances to create sharp and unpredictable flight patterns. And if you think you’re safe just because their arm blades are facing away from you, think again; a kick from a Scyther can kill. We know because it has in the past. Before AND after ninjas, there were Scythers.\n\nBut all over such sizable, meaty paws and toes are numerous deep, fleshy nooks and pockets for dirt and shed skin to become trapped and packed. While the earth of the natural world does a good enough job cleaning that gunk out on its own, the human world is not so merciful for a change, creating the bug equivalent of what we’d commonly call toe jam. And if you think a bug’s feet can’t stink, your nose is in for the awakening of a lifetime. As a Scyther trainer, it is important that you give your Scyther regular foot baths with a cloth for the wide soles and a toothbrush for the creases and folds (though you may do so with your hands, in which case you are a credit to Scyther trainers everywhere). Though not a direct health issue for a Scyther, it will save him the embarrassment, because people nearby WILL mention it. So do him, your nosehairs, and those of everyone around him a favor.\n\n[...]\n\nSurely, you’ve heard the term “scytheskin,” and how it refers to a person whose unruly and flippant behavior often lands him in troublesome or hostile predicaments while somehow always managing to emerge from those situations unblemished. There are many rumors about the origin of the term, often involving protective gear farmers used to wear during harvest. That’s just a euphemism for its true origin: a male Scyther’s foreskin. The way Scythers avoid nicking themselves despite their massive arm blades, their bodies’ many protrusions, and their dance-like mobility is a marvel that eludes the greatest pokémon researchers. And the protrusion that causes most people to wince (particularly men) is male Scythers’ thick penis and wobbly scrotum flopping about in the middle of those slashing swords. Perhaps their miraculous evasion of their own weaponry (hence the etymology of the idiom) is why male Scythers’ reproductive organs have remained as supple as they are over the course of millennia, so you may notice when caring for your Scyther’s how pliant his foreskin is. It wiggles when it’s flicked, it stretches when it’s pulled, it rolls when you pinch it, and slipping a finger inside along the glans feels, to use another pun, as snug as a bug in a rug. \n\nSo what does that have to do with Scyther care? Nothing… as long as pokémon relief areas are well-equipped. Sometimes you will find yourself in a location with only the most basic provisions for pokémon needs, or only for very generalized pokémon-- and Scyther is a very specific specimen. Scythers are accustomed to urinating wherever they are currently standing, but a housebroken male Scyther may need your assistance in public facilities. While doing so, remember to pull your Scyther’s foreskin back all the way past his coronal ridge. Not only will this better direct your Scyther’s urine stream, this also allows you to inspect your Scyther’s penis at the same time for health and cleaning needs. If your Scyther’s foreskin is too tight to peel back all the way, he may have what is called “phimosis,” which is, quite simply, foreskin that is tighter than normal. Phimosis is no cause for alarm. As long as his penis’s natural functions are not inhibited, proceed regular Scyther care as normal. (See page 146 for more information on cleaning your Scyther’s genitals. Should you wish to loosen your Scyther’s phimosis, see “Foreskin-Stretching Exercises For Your Scyther” on page 189.)[/q]\n\nSo you see? "description": "Poor bug pokémon. They get such a bad rap. When they’re not weak, they’re weird. Most people think of them as “starter” or “baby’s first” pokémon. You know, the kind parents catch for their kids because they’re low on maintenance and danger. But as trainers advance, most of them ditch bugs, and honestly, can you blame them? Bug types are often operate in colonies, which doesn’t translate well to one-on-one battles. And they’re not all that flashy when it comes to battle either. Winning because your opponent fell asleep after a light powdering? LAME. Speed drops? YAWN. Binds? SNORE.\n\nOutside of battle, the sun isn’t any shinier. Bug pokémon just can’t compete with fighting, rock, or steel types when it comes to labor. Flying and water types have them beat in transport. And many of them just can’t match the kind of functional power output that dedicated fire or electric types provide. Bugs are primarily useful for farming and, uh… silk? And let’s be real here: they’re BUGS. Skittering, dead-eyed, eldritch bugs. When it comes to cute, cuddly, or cool, the bedrock of each of those tier lists is going to be littered with bug pokémon. The only naysayers are specialists or weirdos who look at a bug and think “Ah, just like me.” Pile on sensitive environmental requirements, and you have a family of pokémon that is more of a ghost at the top than ACTUAL ghost-types!\n\nThat’s why you so often see Scyther as kind of the “face” for bug-types. For starters, Scythers actually HAVE a face to [i]be[/i] a face while still maintaining a bug-like image. Second, watching a Scyther battle is a spectacle that is ironic in how you CAN’T see them! Scythers are renowned for their speed and agility, and with such awe- and fear-inducing blades on their arms, any battle involving a Scyther is like watching the climactic final battle of a samurai movie every minute!\n\nBut for every Scyther with a trainer who can dish out commands with the speed of an auctioneer, there are five more in pokémon adoption centers because their trainers wanted to hug their bug and ended up in the back of an ambulance. Which is why I am providing you with a few excerpts from Dr. Chuck Hayworth’s [i]Blade Dance: A Treatise On Scythers For Home And Field[/i]!\n\n[q]Unlike many mammalian pokémon, Scythers do not interact with objects using their mouths to compensate for a lack of fingers. On one hand (pardon the pun), that means they’re highly adept to a life without hands. But on the other hand, you live in a human world, and if you’re going to bring a Scyther into a human world, be ready to intervene for any of the contraptions, obstacles, and luxuries it comes with which you don’t want diced like tomatoes. And while blade guards exist for Scythers, wearing them often comes at the price of your Scyther’s dignity and morale, as their blades are integral to their identity and pride. In short, if you cannot be a valet, you should not be a Scyther trainer.\n\nPeople underestimate the amount of work, dedication, and enthusiasm that is required for raising Scythers. And if the accolades for a hard-won battle aren’t enough, it can be pretty thankless! Scythers are highly territorial in the wild, fiercely competitive even among each other, and viciously aggressive in combat. They are difficult to bring to heel, and when they are, they have the typical stoic, aloof, impossible-to-read facade bugs are famous for. Want a pokémon who will snuggle up with you on the couch while binge-watching Chancey’s Kitchen? Look elsewhere. A pokémon who can party? Maybe if you need something to make sure people steer clear of the china cabinet. Just want to know what your pokémon is thinking? Unless that message can be delivered by slicing something clean in half, don’t hold your breath because Scyther is a book that is closed. And locked.\n\nBut Scythers are not robots. They have needs, they have emotions, and they ARE grateful for the care they are given! Especially the kind of care that requires hands. And you’ll be SURPRISED how much a bug needs, so I hope you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty.\n\n[...]\n\nGrooming is another aspect of Scyther upbringing a trainer should be well-prepared for both physically and mentally. Humans exist in a world tread by people and pokémon from all over. Littering, tracking dirt, the hot air of urbanization carrying all manners of substances and diseases foreign and unnatural-- a far cry from life in the cool, clean, shaded, pristine forests Scythers are accustomed to. So just how filthy can a bug get in such an environment, you may ask? The answer is VERY.\n\nIn the wild, Scythers are hunting carnivores who eat what they kill, so unless you want your Scyther to prey on your neighbors’ pets, you’ll be feeding them either fresh meat from Pokémarts or, should fresh meat not be available, engineered nutrient meals with a balance of B6. Should you choose the latter, it will be your duty to maintain your Scyther’s oral hygiene by brushing his teeth and tongue regularly, as the filler in nutrient meals tends to cause plaque build-ups, saliva-thickening, tongue residue, and leave other material that, while not a danger to Scythers themselves, can decay and curdle in the enzyme-rich environment of a Scyther’s mouth, leading to a what is colloquially called “Scyther breath” among specialists. And trust us when you say it’s worth preventing.\n\n[...]\n\nWings are not the only parts that are essential to a Scyther’s famous agility! A Scyther’s feet are tremendously important to a Scyther’s speed both in the air and on the ground. Broad soles, muscular toes, and gouging claws are capable of kicking Scyther from a standstill to a bullet in an instant. In the air, a Scyther’s feet can rebound Scyther off of vertical surfaces or the ground to change his trajectory in the blink of an eye, as well as acting as counterbalances to create sharp and unpredictable flight patterns. And if you think you’re safe just because their arm blades are facing away from you, think again; a kick from a Scyther can kill. We know because it has in the past. Before AND after ninjas, there were Scythers.\n\nBut all over such sizable, meaty paws and toes are numerous deep, fleshy nooks and pockets for dirt and shed skin to become trapped and packed. While the earth of the natural world does a good enough job cleaning that gunk out on its own, the human world is not so merciful for a change, creating the bug equivalent of what we’d commonly call toe jam. And if you think a bug’s feet can’t stink, your nose is in for the awakening of a lifetime. As a Scyther trainer, it is important that you give your Scyther regular foot baths with a cloth for the wide soles and a toothbrush for the creases and folds (though you may do so with your hands, in which case you are a credit to Scyther trainers everywhere). Though not a direct health issue for a Scyther, it will save him the embarrassment, because people nearby WILL mention it. So do him, your nosehairs, and those of everyone around him a favor.\n\n[...]\n\nSurely, you’ve heard the term “scytheskin,” and how it refers to a person whose unruly and flippant behavior often lands him in troublesome or hostile predicaments while somehow always managing to emerge from those situations unblemished. There are many rumors about the origin of the term, often involving protective gear farmers used to wear during harvest. That’s just a euphemism for its true origin: a male Scyther’s foreskin. The way Scythers avoid nicking themselves despite their massive arm blades, their bodies’ many protrusions, and their dance-like mobility is a marvel that eludes the greatest pokémon researchers. And the protrusion that causes most people to wince (particularly men) is male Scythers’ thick penis and wobbly scrotum flopping about in the middle of those slashing swords. Perhaps their miraculous evasion of their own weaponry (hence the etymology of the idiom) is why male Scythers’ reproductive organs have remained as supple as they are over the course of millennia, so you may notice when caring for your Scyther’s how pliant his foreskin is. It wiggles when it’s flicked, it stretches when it’s pulled, it rolls when you pinch it, and slipping a finger inside along the glans feels, to use another pun, as snug as a bug in a rug. \n\nSo what does that have to do with Scyther care? Nothing… as long as pokémon relief areas are well-equipped. Sometimes you will find yourself in a location with only the most basic provisions for pokémon needs, or only for very generalized pokémon-- and Scyther is a very specific specimen. Scythers are accustomed to urinating wherever they are currently standing, but a housebroken male Scyther may need your assistance in public facilities. While doing so, remember to pull your Scyther’s foreskin back all the way past his coronal ridge. Not only will this better direct your Scyther’s urine stream, this also allows you to inspect your Scyther’s penis at the same time for health and cleaning needs. If your Scyther’s foreskin is too tight to peel back all the way, he may have what is called “phimosis,” which is, quite simply, foreskin that is tighter than normal. Phimosis is no cause for alarm. As long as his penis’s natural functions are not inhibited, proceed regular Scyther care as normal. (See page 146 for more information on cleaning your Scyther’s genitals. Should you wish to loosen your Scyther’s phimosis, see “Foreskin-Stretching Exercises For Your Scyther” on page 189.)[/q]\n\nSo you see? "description": "Poor bug pokémon. They get such a bad rap. When they’re not weak, they’re weird. Most people think of them as “starter” or “baby’s first” pokémon. You know, the kind parents catch for their kids because they’re low on maintenance and danger. But as trainers advance, most of them ditch bugs, and honestly, can you blame them? Bug types are often operate in colonies, which doesn’t translate well to one-on-one battles. And they’re not all that flashy when it comes to battle either. Winning because your opponent fell asleep after a light powdering? LAME. Speed drops? YAWN. Binds? SNORE.\n\nOutside of battle, the sun isn’t any shinier. Bug pokémon just can’t compete with fighting, rock, or steel types when it comes to labor. Flying and water types have them beat in transport. And many of them just can’t match the kind of functional power output that dedicated fire or electric types provide. Bugs are primarily useful for farming and, uh… silk? And let’s be real here: they’re BUGS. Skittering, dead-eyed, eldritch bugs. When it comes to cute, cuddly, or cool, the bedrock of each of those tier lists is going to be littered with bug pokémon. The only naysayers are specialists or weirdos who look at a bug and think “Ah, just like me.” Pile on sensitive environmental requirements, and you have a family of pokémon that is more of a ghost at the top than ACTUAL ghost-types!\n\nThat’s why you so often see Scyther as kind of the “face” for bug-types. For starters, Scythers actually HAVE a face to [i]be[/i] a face while still maintaining a bug-like image. Second, watching a Scyther battle is a spectacle that is ironic in how you CAN’T see them! Scythers are renowned for their speed and agility, and with such awe- and fear-inducing blades on their arms, any battle involving a Scyther is like watching the climactic final battle of a samurai movie every minute!\n\nBut for every Scyther with a trainer who can dish out commands with the speed of an auctioneer, there are five more in pokémon adoption centers because their trainers wanted to hug their bug and ended up in the back of an ambulance. Which is why I am providing you with a few excerpts from Dr. Chuck Hayworth’s [i]Blade Dance: A Treatise On Scythers For Home And Field[/i]!\n\n[q]Unlike many mammalian pokémon, Scythers do not interact with objects using their mouths to compensate for a lack of fingers. On one hand (pardon the pun), that means they’re highly adept to a life without hands. But on the other hand, you live in a human world, and if you’re going to bring a Scyther into a human world, be ready to intervene for any of the contraptions, obstacles, and luxuries it comes with which you don’t want diced like tomatoes. And while blade guards exist for Scythers, wearing them often comes at the price of your Scyther’s dignity and morale, as their blades are integral to their identity and pride. In short, if you cannot be a valet, you should not be a Scyther trainer.\n\nPeople underestimate the amount of work, dedication, and enthusiasm that is required for raising Scythers. And if the accolades for a hard-won battle aren’t enough, it can be pretty thankless! Scythers are highly territorial in the wild, fiercely competitive even among each other, and viciously aggressive in combat. They are difficult to bring to heel, and when they are, they have the typical stoic, aloof, impossible-to-read facade bugs are famous for. Want a pokémon who will snuggle up with you on the couch while binge-watching Chancey’s Kitchen? Look elsewhere. A pokémon who can party? Maybe if you need something to make sure people steer clear of the china cabinet. Just want to know what your pokémon is thinking? Unless that message can be delivered by slicing something clean in half, don’t hold your breath because Scyther is a book that is closed. And locked.\n\nBut Scythers are not robots. They have needs, they have emotions, and they ARE grateful for the care they are given! Especially the kind of care that requires hands. And you’ll be SURPRISED how much a bug needs, so I hope you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty.\n\n[...]\n\nGrooming is another aspect of Scyther upbringing a trainer should be well-prepared for both physically and mentally. Humans exist in a world tread by people and pokémon from all over. Littering, tracking dirt, the hot air of urbanization carrying all manners of substances and diseases foreign and unnatural-- a far cry from life in the cool, clean, shaded, pristine forests Scythers are accustomed to. So just how filthy can a bug get in such an environment, you may ask? The answer is VERY.\n\nIn the wild, Scythers are hunting carnivores who eat what they kill, so unless you want your Scyther to prey on your neighbors’ pets, you’ll be feeding them either fresh meat from Pokémarts or, should fresh meat not be available, engineered nutrient meals with a balance of B6. Should you choose the latter, it will be your duty to maintain your Scyther’s oral hygiene by brushing his teeth and tongue regularly, as the filler in nutrient meals tends to cause plaque build-ups, saliva-thickening, tongue residue, and leave other material that, while not a danger to Scythers themselves, can decay and curdle in the enzyme-rich environment of a Scyther’s mouth, leading to a what is colloquially called “Scyther breath” among specialists. And trust us when you say it’s worth preventing.\n\n[...]\n\nWings are not the only parts that are essential to a Scyther’s famous agility! A Scyther’s feet are tremendously important to a Scyther’s speed both in the air and on the ground. Broad soles, muscular toes, and gouging claws are capable of kicking Scyther from a standstill to a bullet in an instant. In the air, a Scyther’s feet can rebound Scyther off of vertical surfaces or the ground to change his trajectory in the blink of an eye, as well as acting as counterbalances to create sharp and unpredictable flight patterns. And if you think you’re safe just because their arm blades are facing away from you, think again; a kick from a Scyther can kill. We know because it has in the past. Before AND after ninjas, there were Scythers.\n\nBut all over such sizable, meaty paws and toes are numerous deep, fleshy nooks and pockets for dirt and shed skin to become trapped and packed. While the earth of the natural world does a good enough job cleaning that gunk out on its own, the human world is not so merciful for a change, creating the bug equivalent of what we’d commonly call toe jam. And if you think a bug’s feet can’t stink, your nose is in for the awakening of a lifetime. As a Scyther trainer, it is important that you give your Scyther regular foot baths with a cloth for the wide soles and a toothbrush for the creases and folds (though you may do so with your hands, in which case you are a credit to Scyther trainers everywhere). Though not a direct health issue for a Scyther, it will save him the embarrassment, because people nearby WILL mention it. So do him, your nosehairs, and those of everyone around him a favor.\n\n[...]\n\nSurely, you’ve heard the term “scytheskin,” and how it refers to a person whose unruly and flippant behavior often lands him in troublesome or hostile predicaments while somehow always managing to emerge from those situations unblemished. There are many rumors about the origin of the term, often involving protective gear farmers used to wear during harvest. That’s just a euphemism for its true origin: a male Scyther’s foreskin. The way Scythers avoid nicking themselves despite their massive arm blades, their bodies’ many protrusions, and their dance-like mobility is a marvel that eludes the greatest pokémon researchers. And the protrusion that causes most people to wince (particularly men) is male Scythers’ thick penis and wobbly scrotum flopping about in the middle of those slashing swords. Perhaps their miraculous evasion of their own weaponry (hence the etymology of the idiom) is why male Scythers’ reproductive organs have remained as supple as they are over the course of millennia, so you may notice when caring for your Scyther’s how pliant his foreskin is. It wiggles when it’s flicked, it stretches when it’s pulled, it rolls when you pinch it, and slipping a finger inside along the glans feels, to use another pun, as snug as a bug in a rug. \n\nSo what does that have to do with Scyther care? Nothing… as long as pokémon relief areas are well-equipped. Sometimes you will find yourself in a location with only the most basic provisions for pokémon needs, or only for very generalized pokémon-- and Scyther is a very specific specimen. Scythers are accustomed to urinating wherever they are currently standing, but a housebroken male Scyther may need your assistance in public facilities. While doing so, remember to pull your Scyther’s foreskin back all the way past his coronal ridge. Not only will this better direct your Scyther’s urine stream, this also allows you to inspect your Scyther’s penis at the same time for health and cleaning needs. If your Scyther’s foreskin is too tight to peel back all the way, he may have what is called “phimosis,” which is, quite simply, foreskin that is tighter than normal. Phimosis is no cause for alarm. As long as his penis’s natural functions are not inhibited, proceed regular Scyther care as normal. (See page 146 for more information on cleaning your Scyther’s genitals.
