These were also sent off to the lab for testing. Luna was unsure if anything meaningful would come from these lines of inquiry.\r\n\r\nIt was an unusual request, but the palace arcanist were familiar with having to explore magical questions on the fringes of known, established principles without straying into the realm quackery. Fortunately none of the tests took abnormally long to complete.\r\n\r\nThe next evening her Highness was sitting in a heavily warded chamber that was usually reserved for cabinet meetings with the team and to hear their findings. "description": "Artist’s comment:\r\n\r\nUpon returning to Canterlot in my Equestria dreamscape, Princess Luna turned Applebloom's bow over to team of palace arcane scientists with explicit instruction to submit the bow to a battery of forensic, arcane, alchemical, and esoteric tests to determine if they could detect any properties unusual or exceptional connected to this simple, bright red bow. \r\n>>3785382p\r\n \r\nAs an added bonus, Luna discovered several long strands deep rose red hair from Applebloom's mane along with a couple strands of shorter dark grey that Luna guessed belonged to Stone Mane. These were also sent off to the lab for testing. Luna was unsure if anything meaningful would come from these lines of inquiry.\r\n\r\nIt was an unusual request, but the palace arcanist were familiar with having to explore magical questions on the fringes of known, established principles without straying into the realm quackery. Fortunately none of the tests took abnormally long to complete.\r\n\r\nThe next evening her Highness was sitting in a heavily warded chamber that was usually reserved for cabinet meetings with the team and to hear their findings. Luna might've been a bit paranoid, but she really wanted to keep this conversation very private. The chamber was even protected against interference from the Dream Realm, and Luna had refreshed the wards herself before the meeting.\r\n\r\nHead archivist and mage Gold Scryer levitated her porcelain tea cup and took a sip of her jasmine tea; then she returned the cup to its accompanying saucer. She then adjusted her wire frame glasses and looked down at the first page of their report. She coughed and began speaking.\r\n\r\n“Your Highness. As you ordered we've finished our investigation of the items you gave us custody of yesterday, and we have the results of our tests for those items.”\r\n\r\nThe mare once again glanced down at the report. “The item that you were most interested in, that being the red bow turned out to be relatively basic from an arcane standpoint. Its construction is primarily of cotton with a crimson red dye applied to it. We've determined the fabric is from the Flying Hooves Textile Mill of Fillydelphia, and the natural crimson dye is from the Zebra Kingdom of Senta.”\r\n\r\nThe unicorn turned to the next page of the report and continued. “The fabrication of the bow is consistent with other bows we were able to discreetly obtain from several sources in the immediate area. Performing a Residual Accumulation Resonance Test, or RART, we detected trace resonances similar to the strands of red hair you provided. This is –“\r\n\r\nThe Prussian Blue alicorn raised a front hoof. “Excuse me. Residual resonance? What is this you speak of?” Seeing the looks of surprise and confusion on the faces of team Luna continued. “Remember, I have been gone for the last thousand years, and while I'm striving to catch up as much as possible there's been many advancements in Equestria society and science in my absence.”\r\n\r\nA unicorn stallion named Petri Dish spoke up. “Your Highness. Every living being, but especially ponies, has a subtle, unique, magical signature resonance that emanates from their body. With care, training and if one has a fresh sample like blood, hair, skin, bone, or biological material one can not only determine the tribe that the pony belong to, but in some cases even the individual pony. It has proven invaluable in several criminal investigations.”\r\n\r\nPetri Dish levitated a simple paste board box onto the table and opened it. Sitting in it was Applebloom's bow. The alicorn could seen that in several places small pieces of the bow had been removed for testing. The stallion set the box and bow in front of Luna and continued speaking.\r\n\r\n“Also if an item is frequently used by an individual and kept in close proximity to that individual, that item can accumulate trace elements of that individual's resonance. It is much weaker, harder to detect, and fades much faster, but if one has a fresh enough sample, and one has access to a sufficiently well outfitted lab and trained staff then one can still detect remnants of it.”\r\n\r\nThe stallion consulted his copy of the report. “We were able to determine that bow was worn by a young earth pony. Most likely a filly, the resonance on the bow matched the primary resonance of the strands of red hair you provided us. Although there's several details that we want to discuss with you related to those samples in a moment.”\r\n\r\n“The shorter dark grey hair strands appear to belong to an earth pony. Most likely a colt. The bow bears no detectable trace of their resonance.”\r\n\r\nAn earth pony mare named Slide Rule had been sitting there eagerly waiting to speak up and chose this moment to jump into the conversation. With a grin that Luna had learned to associate with scholastic types having found something new, and interesting the mare spoke.\r\n\r\n“But the real fascinating thing your Highness is those strands of red hair!” Slide Rule exclaimed. “I ran the initial tests, and at first I thought I had made a mistake. Then we thought the equipment had malfunctioned or the components used in the test had suddenly become contaminated. Only after checking the equipment and materials along with having multiple ponies run the test did we come to the conclusion it wasn't an error in our administering of the test, or some anomaly in equipment!”\r\n\r\nGold Scryer nodded her head in agreement. “Your Highness. What we discovered was along with primary resonance of an earth pony filly there also two fainter but definitely present resonances intertwined within the strands of the hair, and it gets even more interesting! After eliminating the possibility local environmental conditions. We also confirmed that resonances do not match any of the pony tribes or that of a griffin, dragon, diamond dog, or Saddle Arabian, so needless to say we started looking deeper into the matter.”\r\n\r\nSlide Rule had flipped further ahead in the report. “We eliminated the influence of Discord, and we considered that the individual might life near the Everfree Forest. Again no match, but then Gold Scryer noticed something that–“\r\n\r\n“Yes!” The older mare interrupted her coworker. “I realized I had seen resonance signatures similar to this before. So I dove into the archives and discovered that the hair had resonances that somewhat similar to the magical residue found at site of the battle when you were possessed by the being that turned you into Nightmare Moon, and that being is believed to have originated in the–“\r\n\r\n“The Dream Realm.” Petri Dish jumped in finished mare's sentence. “This was most unusual since the Dream Realm can rarely effect physical objects in the Waking World. In fact the only item we had on record that has that clear signature is your hair your Highness, and your resonance signature was not one of the two we detected.”\r\n\r\n“So! As you can imagine we're very interested to learn more about this very interesting pony since it would take an extremely acute event or massively powerful individual from the Dream Realm to leave any kind of residual resonance in the Waking World.” Slide Rule said. “That or this pony has had chronic exposure to powerful events or individuals from there.”\r\n\r\n“Fascinating!” Said Gold Scryer.\r\n\r\n“Yes.” Luna said less enthusiastically.\r\n\r\nTo be continued."
